Pratt Manhattan Gallery will present “Manufactured Surfaces: Three Pratt Institute Sponsored Research Studios for Sustainable Architecture and Design,” from May 19-30, 2008. The exhibition features full-scale prototypes, material demonstrations, and project proposals of three sponsored studios from Designtex, Hunter Douglas, and VELUX that took place within Pratt’s Undergraduate Architecture Department and Interior Design Department. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. The reception coincides with the closing day of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, which runs from May 17–20.

Pratt Institute will present “Breaking In,” a panel of five Pratt alumni discussing how they are making their mark on the design world, led by Julie Taraska, a contributor to Interior Design, at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at St. Ann’s Warehouse on 38 Water Street in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. The event is part of the sixth annual BKLYN DESIGNS™ show presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and featuring designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings.

Pratt Institute will present degrees to approximately 1,000 bachelor's and master's degree candidates during its 119th Commencement at 10 a.m. on May 9 on The Grand Mall of the Brooklyn campus. The Institute also will award honorary degrees to architect Zaha Hadid, dancer/choreographer Judith Jamison, and arts administrator Thomas J. Cahill, who will deliver Pratt’s Commencement address at approximately 11 a.m. It will also honor 2008-2009 Distinguished Teacher Floyd Hughes, adjunct associate professor, Communications Design.

Pratt Institute will present 2008 Pratt Show, an annual juried exhibition of exceptional design work by 300 of Pratt’s graduating students from May 6 - 8 at The Manhattan Center, located at 311 West 34th Street. The show is free and open to the public and will be open on Tuesday, May 6 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesday, May 7 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m; and Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Pratt Institute will present to the fashion world the creative talents of its senior class during the annual Pratt Fashion Show on May 7, 2008. There will be two shows – one at 2 p.m. and one at 5:30 p.m. – at The Altman Building located at 135 West 18th Street in Manhattan. The 2008 Pratt Fashion Show is sponsored by the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and Cotton Incorporated.

Personal Biography

Diana Bramham is a PhD candidate with a concentration in Modern Art of the Americas at Rutgers University. Her dissertation explores the national implications: political, economic and cultural, of American artists traveling in Mexico and Cuba in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She teaches seminars and surveys in art history from the Renaissance to the present day.

Personal Biography

Sam Bryan is a filmmaker and film archivist. He has taught courses in film history and production at Brooklyn College, Fordham University and at Pratt since 1983. Since 1960 he has filmed foe the International Film Foundation in Africa and South America. His films have been shown at the American Film Festival, at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He's a past president of the New York Film Festival and continues as Executive Director of the International Film Foundation.

Personal Biography

Sandra Cheng specializes in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art. Her current research examines the production and reception of early modern caricature. Sandra previously taught at the University of Delaware, Rutgers University, and Montclair State University before joining the faculty at Pratt Institute. Recent awards include Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon Fellowship, The Library of Congress; Summer Program Grant, American Academy in Rome.

Personal Biography

Ed DeCarbo has earned 2 degrees in international relations and 2 others in anthropology and African studies. His field research is in West Africa with a focus on aesthetics, the place and practice of the ars in everyday life. At Pratt he teaches non western arts (African, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian), as well as courses that look across those fields and the perspectives of western scholarship toward them at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the first art history survey.

Personal Biography

Professor Edwards grew up in Oklahoma and lives in Manhattan. She studied at the Art Students League and Columbia University. She received a Columbia University Kress Fellowship for 1982-83; a National Endowment for the Humanities Travel-to-Collections Grant for 1988; a Gladys Krieble Delmas Grant for 2000; and travel grants from Columbia University, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts. She has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ragdale Foundation, the Cummington Community of the Arts, the Mary Anderson Center, and the Hambidge Center.
