Traditionally an innovator in education, the Fashion Design Department is part of Pratt’s School of Art and Design, enabling the department to offer interdisciplinary studies with other creative design areas.

Only at Pratt Institute can students combine their studies in the fashion field with courses such as jewelry design, printmaking, and photography, utilizing all areas of the School of Art and Design to explore its full range of creative interests.

The Fashion Design major prepares students to design apparel for various markets by emphasizing both the technical and creative aspects of the industry. Professional viewpoints are fostered through field trips, museum study, and consultations with designers who serve as critics. The department’s faculty members, all active in the fashion field, encourage professionalism.

Students receive a sound background in pattern drafting, draping, construction, and sketching. Techniques in sportswear, eveningwear, and lingerie are emphasized. Notably, students are required to take a computer-aided fashion sketching class, where they learn the latest technology used in the fashion industry. Electives in special fields of design, such as children’s wear, menswear, knitwear, wearable art, accessories, millinery, theatrical costume design, fashion editorial/magazine publishing, and advanced pattern making and draping are also offered.

Experimental Crafts

An experimental approach is applied here to mixed-media crafts providing an introduction to batik, rug making, soft sculpture, weaving, screen-printing, air brushing on fabrics, and direct and indirect discharge fabric printing.

Focuses on specialized patternmaking techniques that will speed up the patternmaking process and add to designing. Patterns include halters, strapless bodices, gussets, various pant designs and asymmetrical styles.

Accessory Design

Provides students with a hands-on, working knowledge of the design and execution of fashion accessories. Lectures cover many areas of accessories, including shoe design, bags, gloves, umbrellas, hair ornaments, and glasses. Students choose three of these areas in which to complete finished projects.

Millinery

Offers the student a chance to experiment with millinery design. Techniques in millinery construction using felt blocks, fabric, straw, and veiling are studied. Students produce several hats during the course of the semester.
