Pratt Institute will exhibit “Present Things,” a site-specific installation of photographs by Switzerland-based artist Katalin Deér, at Pratt Media Arts Gallery from August 25 through September 13, 2008. Deér will also lecture on her work at the Media Arts Gallery on September 11, 2008 at 3 p.m. The exhibition and lecture are free and open to the public.

Pratt Institute will present “Dark Luminance,” a selection of work by Australian artists curated by John Derrick, who received an master of fine arts degree from Pratt in 2000, at Pratt’s Steuben South Gallery now through August 29, 2008. The exhibition is presented by JOLT Arts Inc., an events management company that delivers provocative public displays, and artistically directed by James Hullick.

Harriet Markis was named chair of both the construction and facilities management departments at Pratt Institute in June 2008 after having served as acting chair of both departments since 2007. Markis has taught structural design courses at Pratt since 1990, which is the same year she co-founded structural engineering firm Dunne and Markis with fellow Pratt faculty member Kathleen Dunne.

Jeff Bellantoni was named chair of graduate communications design and packaging design at Pratt Institute in June 2008. He is replacing acting chair Roger Guilfoyle, who held the post since 2007, and comes to Pratt from Mercy College in New York, where he served as chair of the division of civic and cultural studies.

Seven students from Pratt Institute’s 2008 graduating class were selected to have their animation thesis work displayed as part of the international juried exhibition of computer graphics and digital arts at the SIGGRAPH 2008 conference in Los Angeles from Monday, August 11 through Friday, August 15, with a physical and virtual opening ceremony to take place today, August 13, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.

Personal Biography

Twenty-five years experience in fashion. Started in 1983 in a family owned business and then moved on to run lingerie divisions for Natori and Christian Dior while also working closely with moderate to high end retailers such as Victoria's Secret, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom on private label programs. Recently I've worked closely with Pratt NY campus chair on developing a merchandising major for their associates degree program.

Personal Biography

While taking her degree at Pratt in Fine Art she took all available electives in fashion. Immediately upon graduation Rose entered the NY fashion industry where she has thrived since. She has been designing and making patterns for scores of companies during this time. She has also headed her own operation, LOVE NYC, from 1990 to 1999, specializing in contemporary better junior sportswear.
