Pratt Institute will present “Breaking In,” a panel of five Pratt alumni discussing how they are making their mark on the design world, led by Julie Taraska, a contributor to Interior Design, at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at St. Ann’s Warehouse on 38 Water Street in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. The event is part of the sixth annual BKLYN DESIGNS™ show presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and featuring designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings.

Pratt Institute will present degrees to approximately 1,000 bachelor's and master's degree candidates during its 119th Commencement at 10 a.m. on May 9 on The Grand Mall of the Brooklyn campus. The Institute also will award honorary degrees to architect Zaha Hadid, dancer/choreographer Judith Jamison, and arts administrator Thomas J. Cahill, who will deliver Pratt’s Commencement address at approximately 11 a.m. It will also honor 2008-2009 Distinguished Teacher Floyd Hughes, adjunct associate professor, Communications Design.

Pratt Institute will present 2008 Pratt Show, an annual juried exhibition of exceptional design work by 300 of Pratt’s graduating students from May 6 - 8 at The Manhattan Center, located at 311 West 34th Street. The show is free and open to the public and will be open on Tuesday, May 6 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesday, May 7 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m; and Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Pratt Institute professors Joe Fyfe and Thad Ziolkowski were recently selected as two of 190 to receive 2008 Guggenheim Fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Fyfe is a Brooklyn-based painter who is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Painting in the Fine Arts Department. Ziolkowski, a Brooklyn-based writer, is Associate Professor of English and Humanities and Director of the Writing Program.

Pratt Institute will present to the fashion world the creative talents of its senior class during the annual Pratt Fashion Show on May 7, 2008. There will be two shows – one at 2 p.m. and one at 5:30 p.m. – at The Altman Building located at 135 West 18th Street in Manhattan. Four specialized curricular options represent a specific area of interest that corresponds to an area of professional emphasis.
Digital Imaging
This option employs digital and traditional media in the creation of multiple media imagery. It addresses technological issues, procedures, and techniques in creation, design, imaging, printing, and presentation of image-based art. Recommended electives include advanced fine arts or design electives, advanced digital imaging, digital photography, and other imaging-oriented courses.
Digital Animation and Motion Arts
This option concerns itself with form and motion, time-based narrative, and 2- and 3-D animation techniques. Recommended electives include traditional animation, character design and rigging, lighting and rendering, audio and video, and advanced digital animation techniques.
Media
This option concentrates on the design of computer-human interfaces and interactions through digital media including online (Web) media. Students work with a variety of time-based media under computer control. Electives for this option include traditional design courses, programming, interactive, 3-D and advanced interactive media courses.
Emerging Arts
This option provides students with the opportunity to experiment in new forms and mixed media. Electives include interactive installation, robotics and physical computing, device control, as well as digital audio-video and interactive media.

Personal Biography
Liubo Borissov received a doctorate in Physics from Columbia, where he also studied electro-acoustic music at the Columbia University Computer Music Center. He holds a masters in Interactive Telecommunications from NYU's Tisch School, where he was a Global Vilar Fellow in the performing arts.
In his works, he explores the interface between art, science and technology. His multimedia installations, performances and collaborations have been featured throughout Europe, Japan and North America.

Personal Biography
Carla Gannis is the recipient of several awards, including a 2005 New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in Computer Arts, an Emerge 7 Fellowship from the Aljira Art Center, and a Chashama AREA Visual Arts Studio Award in NYC. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Features on Gannis's work have appeared in Res Magazine and Collezioni Edge, and her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The LA Times, The Miami Herald, The Daily News & The Village Voice.

Claudia Herbst is a digital artist and media theorist whose works explore the meaning of technology in the construction of gender. Her critical inquiries focus on the social, political, and economic role of computer programming and contextualize technology´s languages as a form of writing and literacy. Herbst joined the Pratt community in 1999 and currently holds the title of Associate Professor.
