Pratt Institute will present “Breaking In,” a panel of five Pratt alumni discussing how they are making their mark on the design world, led by Julie Taraska, a contributor to Interior Design, at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at St. Ann’s Warehouse on 38 Water Street in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. The event is part of the sixth annual BKLYN DESIGNS™ show presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and featuring designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings.

Pratt Institute will present degrees to approximately 1,000 bachelor's and master's degree candidates during its 119th Commencement at 10 a.m. on May 9 on The Grand Mall of the Brooklyn campus. The Institute also will award honorary degrees to architect Zaha Hadid, dancer/choreographer Judith Jamison, and arts administrator Thomas J. Cahill, who will deliver Pratt’s Commencement address at approximately 11 a.m. It will also honor 2008-2009 Distinguished Teacher Floyd Hughes, adjunct associate professor, Communications Design.

Pratt Institute will present 2008 Pratt Show, an annual juried exhibition of exceptional design work by 300 of Pratt’s graduating students from May 6 - 8 at The Manhattan Center, located at 311 West 34th Street. The show is free and open to the public and will be open on Tuesday, May 6 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesday, May 7 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m; and Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Pratt Institute professors Joe Fyfe and Thad Ziolkowski were recently selected as two of 190 to receive 2008 Guggenheim Fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Fyfe is a Brooklyn-based painter who is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Painting in the Fine Arts Department. Ziolkowski, a Brooklyn-based writer, is Associate Professor of English and Humanities and Director of the Writing Program.

Pratt Institute will present to the fashion world the creative talents of its senior class during the annual Pratt Fashion Show on May 7, 2008. There will be two shows – one at 2 p.m. and one at 5:30 p.m. – at The Altman Building located at 135 West 18th Street in Manhattan. The 2008 Pratt Fashion Show is sponsored by the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and Cotton Incorporated.

Bob Gill, designer/ illustrator/ teacher/ writer/ filmmaker, was the Gill in Fletcher/ Forbes/ Gill which became Pentagram. He's in the NY Art Directors' Hall of Fame; a recipient of the British Art Directors' Association's Lifetime Achievement Award; designer/writer of "Beatlemania," a live and multi-media history of the Sixties for Broadway; author of many books on design and illustration; and represented in exhibitions all over the world.

History
Having achieved high praise for its computer and design offerings, professional development for architects, computer graphics certificate programs and Pre-College program, Pratt Manhattan enables the Institute to continue to offer the best education to all of New York City.
Pratt Institute's Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS) is located at Pratt Institute's Manhattan Center, in Chelsea at 144 West 14th Street. This campus is a state-of-the-art, seven-story, 64,000 square-foot Romanesque revival style building, which was designed by Arnold W. Brunner and Thomas Tryon and constructed 1895-96. Pratt Manhattan has been fully renovated and restored, and provides our students with cutting-edge equipment and spectacular facilities. CCPS offers a wide variety of educational opportunities outside of the traditional degree programs offered by other schools at the Institute. These programs are designed for people seeking to enter the professions; practicing professionals wishing to update their knowledge and acquire skills in specialized fields; young people wishing to explore their talents and learn about careers; and individuals seeking self-development and personal enrichment.

history
The Brooklyn campus of Pratt Institute occupies 25 acres in the heart of Brooklyn's brownstone belt, only 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan, and offers a university atmosphere in an urban setting. The many resources of the Brooklyn campus, including lectures, films, labs, studios, athletic activities, and social life, are available and readily accessible to Pratt Manhattan students.
Pratt's Brooklyn campus was founded by industrialist Charles Pratt in 1887. Realizing that a rapidly industrializing society required a new approach to higher education, he founded a school dedicated to providing students with applied knowledge and specific vocational skills as well as the traditional liberal arts. The first two buildings, Main and East, on the Brooklyn campus, were completed in 1887 and housed programs in such practical subjects as mechanical drawing, wood carving, sewing, nursing, and typing.
True to Charles Pratt's vision the school has always moved forward with the times. Pratt was one of the first schools to recognize the need for advertising design as a specific academic discipline. In 1935 the Art School set up the Department of Advertising Design, forerunner of the current Communications Design programs. In 1936 the Industrial Design Department was founded, making Pratt a pioneer in establishing this new profession. In 1946 Pratt created its Interior Design Department, replacing traditio nal interior decoration courses with a truly professional curriculum.
Liberty Partnerships
The Liberty Partnerships Program is a New York State Education Department funded and collaborative initiative with Pratt Institute. It is conceived to provide remedial and tutorial services in the basics of reading, fundamental mathematics and computer operations, to school-age children, in grades 5 through 12. LPP at Pratt Brooklyn currently services children in grades 5 through 8 who:
- are struggling with reading and math
- need to improve scores on standardized tests
- lack basic computer operation skills
- need to substantially improve grades in school
- and/or are overage for the 5th and 6th grades.

Certificate Requirements
In order to receive Pratt's Certificate in Computer Graphics, students must complete foundation courses, core courses, and electives within your chosen career track.

Students will receive a letter-grade in each course and must maintain a "C" average. Students with particular application requirements outside these career tracks can select courses from different tracks as long as the foundation and certificate requirements are satisfied. Certain courses may be waived with permission of the coordinator of the program. Eighty percent attendance is also required in these courses of study. Students must have an understanding of the basics of design before pursuing their area of concentration.
Please note: Computer Competency (Mac/PC) will be waived outright if you have PC or Mac competency.
Prerequisites
The acceptance of prerequisites mentioned in all catalog listings is subject to the approval of the Associate Director of the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies, or the Associate Director for Academic Computing. Also, if you are competent in any other software application, you may waive that course, but you will need to take another course in its place in order to complete the certificate program requirements.
Computer Facilities Fees
Students registering for thirty-hour computer courses are required to pay a non-refundable facilities fee of $25 per course.
Computer Lab Time
Two hours of lab time is available per week, per course. Students also receive an additional six hours of floating lab time for the semester. Daytime seminars do not include lab time.

A non-refundable deposit of $100 will ensure a place
