Graduate Departmental Requirements
Below is a list of program requirements, location, and entrance terms. If you have not yet read the general application requirements please make sure you do that in addition to the specific program requirements below. You can also read more about degree programs and view student work.
School of Architecture
Architecture First-Professional M.Arch (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree from an institution in the US that is accredited by a recognized regional association or have been awarded the equivalent of the bachelor's degree from an international institution of acceptable standards. Applicants must present a portfolio providing evidence of their interest in architecture or their visual sensibility through the media of their choice--photography, drawing, essays, videos, etc. Portfolios will be accepted on-line at https://pratt.slideroom.com. The GRE is required. The GRE code is R2669.
Post-Professional Architecture MS (summer entrance only) Brooklyn campus
Summer, Fall, Spring program: (June 1 to August 11) Arrival May 31 (tentative): Applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Architecture (five-year B.Arch) from an accredited school of architecture. Applicants should submit all materials as early as possible in order to ensure enough time to review and make decisions and to get the I-20. Ideally, applicants (particularly international applicants) should submit all materials including portfolio by December 1. Applicants will be accepted after the deadline of January 5 only if there is room. Post-professional applicants for both the MS in Architecture and the MS in Architecture and Urban Design must present a portfolio (online at https://pratt.slideroom.com) providing evidence of qualifications to participate in advanced studies. In exceptional circumstances, licensed architects with extensive professional work experience but without the five-year professional degree may ask for special consideration and review of their portfolio to establish proficiency for admission. The GRE is not required. This program begins in the summer only and ends in the spring for a total of three consecutive semesters.
Post-Professional Architecture and Urban Design MS (summer entrance only) Brooklyn campus

City and Regional Planning MS (fall and spring) Brooklyn campus
Applicants should have received their bachelor's degree in any field and in addition to the personal statement must submit an extended piece of writing to support their application for advanced study. The writing sample may be a term paper or report done for work and depending on the applicant's background and is not required to be related to planning. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room.
Facilities Management MS (fall and spring) Manhattan campus
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in architecture, construction management, engineering, or interior design. Applicants in other fields are eligible but may be required to take non-credit courses in building technology unless they have acquired equivalent knowledge through non-academic experience. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room. A statement of purpose in essay format (600 words) is required. The GRE or GMAT is optional; neither are required. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room.
Historic Preservation MS (fall and spring) Manhattan campus
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Applications will be accepted after the deadline until the program is full. TOEFL of 600 (250 or 100 Internet) is required for international students. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room.
Environmental Systems Management MS (fall and spring) Brooklyn campus
Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree in a scientific, analytical, or technical field. They must submit a writing sample or portfolio, depending on their background. The writing sample or portfolio should indicate an interest in or awareness of issues to be addressed in this program. The GMAT is optional. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room.
School of Art and Design
Art and Design Education MS (Teacher Certification) (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must have completed a four year undergraduate degree program with a minimum of 24 credit hours in the appropriate technical courses in art and the history of art and a course in child and adolescent psychology at a regionally accredited higher education institution that is accredited or approved by the New York State Education Department. A course in child and adolescent psychology and six credits in a foreign language are also required as pre- or co-requisites. Applicant must submit a portfolio of 15 images including observational drawings along with other media in color copies or digital format. (may include teaching projects) A telephone or personal interview will follow. TOEFL of 600(250 or 100 internet) is required for international students.
A 24 credit hour program is open to individuals with an M.F.A degree or those currently enrolled in the M.F.A program at Pratt. The portfolio requirements are the same as those listed for the M.S in Art and Design Education. The program may be completed in two semesters by those already holding the M.F.A degree.
Arts and Cultural Management (fall only) Manhattan campus
Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience in a related field or activity - social community engagement involving the arts. The required statement of purpose should reflect the applicant's personal vision of how this program fits in with his/her personal and professional goals including how the applicant hopes to use the skills he/she acquires in this program. The statement should be no more than 500 words or two pages. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of international students. Applications will be accepted throughout the semester. The GMAT is optional.
Art Therapy and Creativity Development MPS (fall and spring intensive) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in studio art or psychology. Applicants must have 18 undergraduate credits in studio art, to include course work in drawing, painting, and 3D media to include ceramic/clay work, and 12 credits in psychology, to include course work in general, personality, abnormal and developmental psychology. A portfolio of twelve to fifteen slides or digital images (submit online at https://pratt.slideroom.com) is required of all applicants. Applicants are contacted for an interview when all credentials have been received. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of all international students. No TOEFL waivers will be issued unless student's first language is English.
Communications Design: Pratt now offers both the MS in Communications Design and the MFA.
Communications Design MFA (fall only) Manhattan campus
Applicants must be highly motivated individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in graphic design or related design field such as industrial or interior design, architecture, fine arts or media arts. Exceptional individuals from disparate disciplines may be admitted provisionally and required to take design foundation courses. All applicants must submit a portfolio of work to be reviewed by an Admissions Committee comprised of faculty. Work included in the portfolio may be personal work, professional assignments, or course assignments done in an undergraduate or graduate program. Your portfolio should contain between 12 and 20 examples of your best work in traditional or digital media. In addition to the portfolio, the written statement of purpose is given significant consideration. The intent of this portfolio review is for you to demonstrate creative potential, and give us enough information about you to determine whether or not this program is appropriate for you. Most important, the Admissions Committee will be determining if you demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the Masters degree program in Communications Design.

Communications Design MS (fall only), Package Design MS (fall only) Manhattan campus
Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in graphic design or related design fields such as industrial or interior design, architecture, fine art or media arts, but we give serious consideration to applicants with degree/backgrounds from non-design degrees who demonstrate a strong aptitude for graduate study. A qualifying program of an additional 6 credits of prerequisite classes may be required for these applicants. Work included in the portfolio may be self-generated, professional assignments, or course assignments done in an undergraduate or graduate program. Your portfolio should contain between 12 and 20 examples of your best work, including drawings, paintings, prints, graphic design, websites, photographs, videos, animations, three-dimensional sculptures or models, or computer-generated artwork. The intent of this portfolio review is for you to demonstrate creative potential, and give us enough information about you to determine whether or not this program is appropriate for you. Most important, the Admissions Committee will determine if you demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the Masters degree program in Communications Design.

Dance/Movement Therapy MS (fall and spring intensive) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in dance or psychology. Prerequisites are 12 credits in psychology to include general, abnormal, theories of personality, and developmental psychology; and course work in anatomy/kinesiology. Students must also have extensive experience in at least two idioms of dance, one of which must be modern dance. Students must have experience in body/mind modalities, such as meditation, yoga, and body therapy. A written synopsis of dance training and experience must be submitted with the application. A personal interview will be required, part of which will include movement. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of all international students. No TOEFL waivers will be issued unless student's first language is english.
Design Management MPS (fall only) Manhattan campus
Applicants should ideally present an undergraduate degree in one of the design disciplines with a minimum of three years professional experience. A resume is also required (may be uploaded at Slideroom (https://pratt.slideroom.com). A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of international applicants. The GMAT is optional. Applications will be considered throughout the semester up until June 1.
Digital Arts MFA (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants to the Master of Fine Arts in Digital Arts must have an undergraduate degree in art, design or animation. No reviews are done in person but applicants are encouraged to arrange a visit to the department by calling 718-636-3411. Applicants must submit 12-15 pieces of work in traditional or digital media (1) online at https://pratt.slideroom.com (preferred format) or (2) in slide format or prints or (3) in DVD or CD-ROM format but only in addition to slides or print or online submission. CDs or DVDS must be viewable on Macintosh. You may upload video works using the online submission link above. The graduate admissions review committee is interested in work that reflects creativity, technical facility, and the conceptual skills to develop a sophisticated body of work. A TOEFL score of 550(paper), 213(computer), or 79 (internet) is required.
Fine Arts MFA (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must have a studio art degree (either the BFA or BA in Studio Art) or at least forty undergraduate credits in studio art (excluding art history and aesthetics). No reviews are done in person, but applicants are encouraged to arrange a visit to the department by calling 718-636-3602. Applicants are asked to upload their portfolio of 15 to 20 images online at https://pratt.slideroom.com accompanied by a list describing size, materials used, and date for completion for each image.. The graduate admissions review committee is interested in a serious exploration of an idea rather than a portfolio that contains a variety of work or styles. It is possible for an applicant to work in several media for example, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, as long as all of the work is concerned with a central idea. The MFA is a professional degree and therefore the committee is interested in work done during the latter part of an applicant's college career. A TOEFL score of 550 (paper), 213 (computer), or 79 (Internet) is required.
Industrial Design MID (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants for the Masters of Industrial Design program should submit a portfolio on-line at https://pratt.slideroom.com including both text (descriptions, problem statement, etc.) and images (from development sketches to finished work). The portfolio must contain examples of drawings as a communication tool, three-dimensional objects, and a basic understanding of graphic design, executed through presentation and layout. Showing both the process and execution of a project, along with problem solving and research is recommended. Please include any additional materials that tell the story of who you are as a creative person. Please use the description section in slideroom, which includes a section for additional information (up to 1000 characters or 250 words) to describe your process for each image. The MID program is highly collaborative and includes students from a wide variety of background, therefore, in the written statement, discuss aspects of your personal character and background that would contribute to and benefit from a collaborative learning environment. A TOEFL of 575 (paper) 233 (computer) or 90 (internet) is required.
Interior Design MS (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants with an undergraduate degree in interior design, architecture, or other closely related design fields are eligible for the 48 credit two-year graduate program. A portfolio is required for the two year MS. (See guidelines for submission below). A two semester Qualifying Program of an additional 20 credits is required for applicants whose undergraduate backgrounds are unrelated to interior or architecture but whose applications indicate a strong aptitude for graduate study. These students complete 68 credits in three years. It should be noted that applicants to the Qualifying Program are not required to submit a portfolio. We do encourage applicants to the Qualifying Program to submit a portfolio of work from other disciplines and interest such as fine arts, fashion, industrial design or communications design.
Portfolios (15-25 images) should be submitted as follows: (1) Upload at https://pratt.slideroom.com - strongly preferred (2) print portfolio sized 8.5" x 11" hard copies may be submitted. Students applying to the two year program, portfolio must demonstrate skills from previous education and/or professional experience. Please make sure to notate attributions in group projects and/or professional work. Students applying to the three-year graduate program who do have work to show may submit it according to the formats above. We do not schedule interviews in person but applicants are encouraged to arrange a visit to the department by calling 718 636-3630. A TOEFL score of 600 (paper), 250 (computer) or 100 (internet) is required of international students.
Theory, Criticism, and History of Art, Design, and Architecture MS (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must demonstrate skills of observation and description, analysis and criticism, the potential to successfully complete the course work, and to design and present a graduate thesis of merit. Undergraduate study in art and/or design history is encouraged, and at least an introduction in those fields should be included in the completed undergraduate curriculum. requirements include a personal statement describing why you are interested in Pratt and your motivation for the degree (may be typed or uploaded on the application itself or at Slideroom (https://pratt.slideroom.com), a writing sample (5-10 pages) demonstrating analytic and communication skills (also uploaded at Slideroom), and recently earned scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE code R2669) sent to us by ETS. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of the TOEFL exam and score at least 600 (250 computer or 100 internet) (sent by testing company). Competence in a research language, either French or German, must be demonstrated prior to submission of the thesis.
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Media Studies MA (fall only) Brooklyn campus
Applicants must submit 10-20 pages of relevant writing sample(s), with emphasis on analytical writing about media (uploadable at Slideroom (https://pratt.slideroom.com). All applicants must follow the standard admission process for graduate programs at Pratt.
School of Information and Library Science
Library and Information Science MS (fall, summer and spring) Manhattan campus
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university representing sound, basic training in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences. He/she must have a superior scholastic record or otherwise give evidence of ability to perform work on the graduate level. Applicants are expected to offer evidence of maturity and leadership potential for the profession. An interview may be required; applicants will be contacted by the library school if an interview is deemed necessary. When candidates live a distance from New York and a personal interview is not feasible, additional references in support of their applications may be necessary. The school may request that applicants take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) when it is judged from a review of the application that there is some question as to academic ability. SILS students may take no more than a total of six credits as non-matriculated (non-degree) students. All non-matriculated students must obtain written permission from SILS. International students must submit a TOEFL score of at least 600 (250 computer or 100 internet). Students who are not international but whose first language is not English must submit the GRE or TOEFL. Students may continue to apply after the January 5th deadline until the department is full.
Advanced Certificates in Library and Information Science (fall, summer and spring)
Applicants for advanced certificates must hold a master's degree in library science or in a closely related field. The latter students as well as students holding their library degrees from international universities may, at the discretion of the dean, be required to take additional courses on the master's level. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer, 100 internet) is required.
