Graduate Departmental Requirements
In addition to the general application requirements, most graduate departments have additional portfolio or other requirements. Please read both carefully.
School of Architecture
Architecture First-Professional M.Arch (fall only)
Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree from an institution in the US that is accredited by a recognized regional association or have been awarded the equivalent of the bachelor's degree from an international institution of acceptable standards. Applicants must present a portfolio providing evidence of their interest in architecture or their visual sensibility through the media of their choice--photography, drawing, essays, videos, etc. Portfolios must be submitted in print format. The GRE is required. The GRE code is R2669.
Post-Professional Architecture MS (summer only)
Summer, Fall, Spring program: (June 2 to August 12) Arrival June 1: Applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Architecture (five-year B.Arch) from an accredited school of architecture. Applicants should submit all materials as early as possible in order to ensure enough time to review and make decisions and to get the I-20. Ideally, applicants (particularly international applicants) should submit all materials including portfolio by December 1. Applicants will be accepted after the deadline of January 5 only if there is room. Post-professional applicants for both the MS in Architecture and the Ms in Architecture and Urban Design must present a portfolio (print only) providing evidence of qualifications to participate in advanced studies. In exceptional circumstances, licensed architects with extensive professional work experience but without the five-year professional degree may ask for special consideration and review of their portfolio to establish proficiency for admission. Beginning Summer 2010, this program will begin in the summer and end in the spring for a total of three consecutive semesters.

City and Regional Planning MS (fall and spring)
Applicants should have received their bachelor's degree in any field and must submit an extended piece of writing to support their application for advanced study. The writing sample may be a term paper or report done for work and depending on the applicant's background and is not required to be related to planning. Applications will be accepted after the deadline if there is room.
Facilities Management MS (fall and spring)
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in architecture, construction management, engineering, business or interior design. Applicants in other fields are eligible but may be required to take non-credit courses in building technology unless they have acquired equivalent knowledge through non-academic experience. Applications are accepted throughout the semester.
Historic Preservation MS (fall and spring)
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Applications will be accepted after the deadline.
Environmental Systems Management MS (fall and spring)
Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree in a scientific, analytical, or technical field. They must submit a writing sample or portfolio, depending on their background. The writing sample or portfolio should indicate an interest in or awareness of issues to be addressed in the program. Applications will be accepted after the deadline until the program is full.
School of Art and Design
Art and Design Education MS (fall and spring)
Applicants must have completed a four year undergraduate degree program with a minimum of 36 credit hours in the appropriate technical courses in art and the history of art and a course in child and adolescent psychology at a regionally accredited higher education institution that is accredited or approved by the New York State Education Department. To complete the application, applicant must send ten color copies of his or her own artwork (may include teaching projects but must include observational drawing and painting.) A telephone or personal interview will follow. TOEFL of 600(250 or 100 internet) is required for international students.
Arts and Cultural Management (fall only)
Applicants must present an undergraduate degree in the art or design disciplines with at least three years of arts/culture experience. A 3.0 undergraduate cumulative index is required. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of international students. Applications will be accepted throughout the semester until June 1.
Art Therapy and Creativity Development MPS (fall and spring intensive)
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in studio art or psychology. Applicants must have 15 undergraduate credits in studio art, to include course work in drawing, painting, and 3D media, and 12 credits in psychology, to include course work in general, personality, abnormal and developmental psychology. A portfolio of twelve to fifteen slides is required of all applicants. Applicants are contacted for an interview when all credentials have been received. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of all international students. No TOEFL waivers will be issued unless student's first language is English.
Communications Design MS (fall only)
Work included in the portfolio may be self-generated, professional assignments, or course assignments done in an undergraduate or graduate program. Your portfolio should contain between 12 and 20 examples of your best work, including drawings, paintings, prints, graphic design, websites, photographs, videos, animations, three-dimensional sculptures or models, or computer-generated artwork. The intent of this portfolio review is for you to demonstrate creative potential, and give us enough information about you to determine whether or not this program is appropriate for you. Most important, the Admissions Committee will be determining if you demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the Masters degree program in Communications Design. Portfolios should be submitted online at https://pratt.slideroom.com. A minimum TOEFL score of 575 (paper), 233 (computer), or 90 (internet) or IELTS of 6.5 is required..
Dance/Movement Therapy MS (fall and spring intensive)
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in dance or psychology. Prerequisites are 12 credits in psychology to include general, abnormal, theories of personality, and developmental psychology; and course work in anatomy/kinesiology. Students must also have extensive experience in at least two idioms of dance, one of which must be modern dance. Students must have experience in body/mind modalities, such as meditation, yoga, body therapy. A written synopsis of dance training and experience must be submitted with the application. A personal interview will be required, part of which will include movement. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of all international students. No TOEFL waivers will be issued unless student's first language is english.
Design Management MPS (fall only)
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in one of the design disciplines with a minimum of three years professional experience. A resume is required. A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet) is required of international applicants. Applications will be considered throughout the semester up until June 1.
Digital Arts MFA (fall only)
Applicants to the Master of Fine Arts in Digital Arts must have an undergraduate degree in art and design. Applicants must submit 12-15 pieces of work in traditional or digital media (1) online at https://pratt.slideroom.com (preferred format) or (2) in slide format or prints or (3) in DVD or CD-ROM format but only in addition to slides or print or online submission. CDs or DVDS must be viewable on Macintosh. You may upload video works using the online submission link above. A portfolio should represent extensive preparation in the area in which the applicant wishes to major and include some work in the minor area. A TOEFL score of 550 is required.
Fine Arts MFA (fall only)
Applicants must have a studio art degree (either the BFA or BA in Studio Art) or at least forty undergraduate credits in studio art (excluding art history and aesthetics). No reviews are done in person, but applicants are encouraged to arrange a visit to the department by calling 718-636-3602. Applicants are asked to upload their portfolio of 15 to 20 images) online at https://pratt.slideroom.com. The graduate admissions review committee is interested in a serious exploration of an idea rather than a portfolio that contains a variety of work or styles. It is possible for an applicant to work in several media for example, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, as long as all of the work is concerned with a central idea. The MFA is a professional degree and therefore the committee is interested in work done during the latter part of an applicant's college career. A TOEFL score of 550 (paper), 213 (computer), or 79 (Internet) is required.
Industrial Design MID (fall only)
Applicants for the Masters of Industrial Design program should submit a portfolio in print format. Each piece should be no larger then 8.5" x 11" and may contain both text and images. There are no maximum or minimum numbers of images. The portfolio must contain examples of drawing and sketching as a communication tool, the building of three dimensional objects, and basic graphic design skills using computer presentation programs. Showing project process as well as final product is recommended. Please include any additional materials that tell the story of who you are as a creative person. You may include digital media in addition if you wish, but we would prefer not to have it as the only submission. The MID program is highly collaborative and includes students from a wide variety of backgrounds. It is therefore helpful to include in the statement special skills that would benefit your peers. A TOEFL of 575 (paper) 233 (computer) or 90 (internet) is required.
Interior Design MS (fall only)
Applicants with an undergraduate degree in interior design, architecture, or other closely related design fields are eligible for the two-year graduate program. A portfolio is required (See guidelines for submission below). Applicants with unrelated undergraduate degrees are eligible for the three-year graduate program. No portfolio is required, but students are expected to have basic architectural drafting skills and basic visual background in such fundamentals as drawing, two-dimensional or three-dimensional design. Special course work is provided at Pratt during the summer session for students entering the interior design program in the fall.
Portfolios (15-25 images) may be submitted in several ways: (1) Upload at https://pratt.slideroom.com (2) CD-ROM or prints: A CD-ROM with a PowerPoint presentation of portfolio or 8.5" x 11" hard copies my be submitted demonstrating skills from previous education and/or professional experience. Students applying to the three-year graduate program who do have work to show may submit it according to the formats above Interviews and tours of the department are recommended when possible. Students requesting an interview should contact the department directly at 718 636-3630. A TOEFL score of 575 (paper), 233 (computer) or 90 (internet) is required of international students.
Packaging Design MS (fall only)

Theory, Criticism, and History of Art, Design, and Architecture MS (fall only)
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree including a survey course in undergraduate art history. Students must submit results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), have or acquire reading knowledge of French or German. A writing sample is required. The GRE code is R2669.
School of Information and Library Science
Library and Information Science MS (fall and spring)
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university representing sound, basic training in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences. He/she must have a superior scholastic record or otherwise give evidence of ability to perform work on the graduate level. Applicants are expected to offer evidence of maturity and leadership potential for the profession. An interview may be required; appilcants will be contacted by the library school if an interview is deemed necessary. When candidates live a distance from New York and a personal interview is not feasible, additional references in support of their applications may be necessary. The school may request that applicants take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) when it is judged from a review of the application that there is some question as to academic ability. SILS students may take no more than a total of six credits as non-matriculated (non-degree) students. All non-matriculated students must obtain written permission from SILS. Applications are accepted throughout the semester. International students must submit a TOEFL score of at least 600 (250 computer or 100 Internet). Students who are not international but whose first language is not English must submit the GRE or TOEFL.
Advanced Certificates in Library and Information Science (fall and spring)
Applicants for advanced certificates must hold a master's degree in library science or in a closely related field. The latter students as well as students holding their library degrees from international universities may, at the discretion of the dean, be required to take additional courses on the master's level. A TOEFL score of 600 is required.
