Most summer courses are open to students from other colleges. Make sure you check pre-requisites before you submit your non-degree form. Pratt offers two summer sessions. Follow the instructions below to register for a summer course.

We also have classes offered by professional studies that are ideal for students who are looking for an introductory art and design courses. All are held at our Manhattan campus.

housing on campus

Summer housing is available for students registered for summer classes on a first-come, first-served basis. Typically, all summer housing is assigned in Willoughby Hall. Summer housing rates are based on the same weekly cost as the academic year (fall & spring semesters), with the whole summer being 12 weeks and one session being 6 weeks. To reserve summer housing, a $50 deposit is required as soon as your non-degree application is approved. Summer housing is typically offered only to specific floors in Willoughby Hall. Additional details are available when the Summer Housing application and Summer Housing brochure is published in March each year. Summer assignments are completed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Cancellation Process
Students who wish to cancel their housing request or assignment should pay special attention to the Cancellation Penalty & Refund Schedule of the Residence, Section VII of the Residential Hall License.

Start preparing your portfolio this summer. Earn 4 college credits.

Each summer, 400 high school students experience college-level study in Pratt Institute’s Pre-College program. Immerse yourself in a program of art, design, architecture, creative writing, and cultural studies modeled after Pratt’s BFA offerings. Upon completion of the program, students earn four elective college credits.

Career Services provides outstanding service to students and alumni, providing them with assistance in portfolio development, resume writing, and job placement. Services are available online as well as in the office, with employer listings online as well as workshops and advice.

Counselors are always available to meet with students to discuss job search strategies, job search tools such as resume and portfolio, and career aspirations. The office works with alumni from recent grads to alumni nearing retirement in order to help them maximize their career success.

An internship is a form of experiential learning. You are placed at a job site according to your interests and learn on the job.

It should be a combination of practicing skills you already have and learning new ones. In some cases, internships can lead to further professional opportunities, but in every case it is a great way to gain experience, meet new people, and build your career network.

Because internships are considered learning experiences, it is also a good way to assess your strengths and weaknesses. As an intern, you are able to test your career goals and explore your options before entering as a professional.

At Pratt, the internship program is an academic experience, where students receive credits based on the number of contact hours at the internship site and department policy. Your internship experience will likely be accompanied by a seminar or a series of structured meetings.

To intern, you must be a junior or senior.

Merit-based scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students.

Undergraduate: Freshmen merit awards are based on the portfolio, GPA and SAT scores. Architecture merit awards are based only on GPA and test scores. Merit scholarships range from $5,000 to 15,000 annually provided students maintain a 2.5 GPA. Students who file the FAFSA and qualify for financial aid received need-based aid in addition to the scholarship. Transfer scholarships are based on portfolio and college GPA.

Graduate Scholarships: scholarships are awarded by the program department upon acceptance. A small number are available to second year students as well as graduate assistantships and restricted and endowed scholarships. The first-year graduate scholarships range from $1,000 to 13,000 for one-year. They are not renewable automatically.

All merit-based scholarships are awarded automatically based on merit. There is no application process.

International scholarships: international students are eligible for our international scholarships, which range from $3,000 to $10,000 a year for four or five years at a savings of up to $50,000. International students do not qualify for need-based aid.

Net Cost
In considering colleges, it is important to understand whether the schools you are looking at award merit scholarships in addition to need-based aid. Pratt has a generous merit-based scholarship program. Three out of five freshmen at Pratt receive a merit scholarship ranging from $6,000 to $15,000 (architecture) or $13,000 (other programs) a year for a total savings of up to $$75,000 over four years.

There are other ways to get to know Pratt. Each fall, Pratt's admissions counselors travel throughout the US attending National Portfolio Days and scheduling individual appointments/portfolio reviews with students and families. These are scheduled in hotels by appointment.

Pratt provides students with an outstanding professional education and a traditional residential college experience within the exciting creative environment of one of the pre-eminent art schools in the US. Pratt's undergraduate interior design program was ranked 2nd nationally for the fifth straight year in the 2008 survey published by DesignIntelligence,a journal for professional designers. Industrial design was ranked 5th. Architecture was ranked ninth. Although US News no longer ranks undergraduate art programs in its specialty art schools section, it can be useful to check acceptance rates, 25-75th percentiles for SAT scores, retention rates, etc. as well as to see the listing of all the specialty art schools. Pratt is among the most selective schools in that list.

Often it's faculty connections that land you your internship and eventually your first job whether it's directly through your instructors or through our Career Services Office. The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provides an opportunity for admission and support to talented New York students who have not reached their full academic potential due to barriers in their educational, economic, or personal background.

HEOP Students are Pratt students. They attend the same classes, live in the same residence halls, participate in the same extracurricular activities, have access to the same resources, and pursue the same careers as other Pratt students. HEOP provides additional supportive services designed to assist students with academic, financial, social and personal matters. This includes tutoring, counseling, and financial aid for students throughout their college careers.

The ultimate goal of the program is to make higher education possible for students who are inadmissible under regular admissions guidelines, but who have the potential and motivation for academic success. Students who are reviewed and found not admissable must also meet the following guidelines.

National Portfolio Day Association

The National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) was created solely for the organization and planning of National Portfolio Days. Since 1978, NPDA members have been hosting portfolio days and career-in-the-arts events throughout the country. The Association consists of accredited art colleges and university art departments which are members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It is the only organization of its kind, and its membership represents the highest standard of visual arts education available in the United States.

Deferring admission

Undergraduate
Accepted freshmen who wish to defer entrance for one year (same semester) must write a letter of request or email to William Swan, Associate Director of Recruitment, at wswan@pratt.edu. Pratt will grant freshman requests for deferral for one year. Freshmen who defer their admission may not attend another college for credit in the meantime. If they do, they must request consideration for admission as a transfer student.

Transfer requests for deferral are not granted. Transfers may request that their application be reactivated (reconsidered for admission) the following year.

Spring entrance is not an option for most programs. Only associate’s degree and construction management programs accept students for spring.

If a student is permitted to defer enrollment to a later semester, he/she still must submit an enrollment deposit of $200 to hold the spot. Scholarships and financial aid awards will be re-evaluated and may change for the new semester to which the student is deferring.

Graduate students may defer for one year and should contact Young Hah at yhah@pratt.edu to request deferral. An enrollment deposit is required as well.

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provides an opportunity for admission and support to talented New York students who have not reached their full academic potential due to barriers in their educational, economic, or personal background.

HEOP Students are Pratt students. They attend the same classes, live in the same residence halls, participate in the same extracurricular activities, have access to the same resources, and pursue the same careers as other Pratt students. HEOP provides additional supportive services designed to assist students with academic, financial, social and personal matters. This includes tutoring, counseling, and financial aid for students throughout their college careers.

The ultimate goal of the program is to make higher education possible for students who are inadmissible under regular admissions guidelines, but who have the potential and motivation for academic success. Students who are reviewed and found not admissable must also meet the following guidelines.
Admission Requirements:
U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Resident of New York State
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
First-time college applicant
Inadmissible to Pratt under regular admission guidelines
Demonstrate the academic potential for satisfactory completion of a degree program
Meet New York State’s HEOP income guidelines
Attend mandatory six week summer enrichment program

Brooklyn Campus Tours
Tours go out Monday and Friday at 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, tours go out 10:00 and 2:00. Tours include the library, cafeteria, residence hall room (if available), career services, and the athletic resources center. Manhattan Tours

National Portfolio Day at Pratt

The National Portfolio Day at Pratt is a chance for you to show the best of your creative work to faculty and admissions representatives from over 50 of the most prestigious art and design schools in the United States. It's an opportunity to have your portfolio critiqued by experienced college representatives. (Some colleges may accept the portfolio you present as the visual portion of your application.) You'll also be able to discuss your work, your college plans, and your concerns and obtain information about the colleges in which you're interested. Bring your original artwork in two- and three-dimensional formats. You can include work in-progress, sketch books and tear sheets.

What is a National Portfolio Day?

National Portfolio Days serve a variety of purposes. Most importantly, they help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review your work and offer critique. You will hear many different opinions about your work. Do not hesitate to explain how you develop your ideas, and where you want to go with them.

It is understood that some people make certain kinds of art more successfully than others. Do not be discouraged if you see work that is "better" than yours. A National Portfolio Day may be the first time you have seen so many people in one place who all share a powerful commitment to the arts. This experience is a small taste of what attending a professional art program can be like. We hope you will enjoy the intensity of the experience.

National Portfolio Days are also about the exchange of information: about your work, yourself, your college plans, your concerns. They are not an examination or a competition. The college representatives are pleased to discuss their programs with you. Of course they can be most helpful when discussing your work, but it can also include works in progress, sketch books and tear sheets. Do not spend an inordinate amount of time matting or framing your work, or worrying about the presentation. The work itself is what is of interest.

No admissions decisions or scholarship awards will be offered to you at a National Portfolio Day. Some colleges represented may accept the portfolio you present as the visual portion of your application. Other colleges have review structures which prohibit them from making a definitive portfolio decision at the time of your review. All expect your art to progress in the coming months. We urge you to discuss your work with as many representatives as possible.
