Research in the Department of Mathematics and Science

Our Math and Science faculty are engaged in research across several disciplines. Research equipment in our department includes a portable Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Mobile Universal Surface Explorer (NMR-MOUSE) which allows non-destructive exploration of the chemistry of pigments and binders in paintings and illustrations (Prof. Eleonora Del Federico and Prof. Cindie Kehlet). The NMR-MOUSE has recently been used in fresco conservation research at field sites in Italy. Our environmental chemistry and art conservation researchers also utilize X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers in the analysis of trace metal content and behavior in a variety of media.

Several of our faculty are engaged in computer modeling, with active research into the relationships between chemical structure and toxicity (Prof. Marvin Charton), contaminant transport in drainage basins and sediments (Prof. Damon Chaky), and modeling of group behavior as it relates to resource distribution in ecological systems (Prof. Chris Jensen).

Our faculty (Prof. Ágnes Mócsy) is actively involved in high-energy nuclear physics researching the nature of nuclear matter (that's matter that we are all made of) when it is heated and compressed to temperatures and densities the universe had one microsecond after the Big Bang.
