City and Regional Planning M.S.
Master of Science in City and Regional Planning
Pratt’s accredited Master of Science in City and Regional Planning requires 60 credits. The schedule of classes allows for prospective students to enter in fall or spring, and complete their studies in two or three years.
The core program of required courses (in the first half of study) allows students to develop an understanding of community development, land use, and sustainability issues. Electives and studios (in the second half of study) allow students to either hone or broaden their skills and knowledge. As the Demonstration of Professional Competence, students must prove their analytical and creative capacity to deal with an advanced problem in planning. The Demonstration may be a project related to a specific course, or an employment-related performance, or a thesis that makes an original contribution to the field, or even a documentary.
Since its inception 50 years ago, the City and Regional Planning Program has remained true to its emphasis on combining an education that emphasizes practice over theory, participatory planning over top-down policy making, and advocacy over technocracy.
To promote specialized or interdisciplinary study, half of the credits are in elective seminars and studios. While by no means required, each student can focus on one of four particular professional concentrations, each of which has is own faculty coordinator:
• Community development and advocacy
• Environmental planning and policy
• Preservation planning and livable cities
• Physical planning and urbanism
Further, it is possible to pursue a Master of Science degree from Pratt jointly with a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School.
