Sculpture

Pratt Institute holds one of the leading BFA Sculpture programs in New York City and the country.  Sculpture today has many diverse approaches, both traditional and cutting edge, which often encompasses a multitude of different mediums, techniques and ideas; the study of Sculpture at Pratt embraces this.

Through the exploration of various concepts, material processes and rigorous critique, the student works toward developing their own unique vision and practice. The curriculum is built around the major studio and elective classes in which various ideas, mediums and processes are explored. Students can utilize the extensive Wood, Metal and Ceramic facilities as well as digital and alternative mediums. Concepts and material techniques are investigated in the Sophomore year and in Junior year the student expands upon various processes and materials of their choosing while undertaking more advanced concepts. In Senior Thesis the student independently develops their most advanced work within a class structure of presentations, individual and group critiques.  Seniors are offered their own studio and have a final Thesis Exhibition on the Pratt Campus.

The Sculpture area boasts a prestigious and nationally recognized faculty who are active in the New York art world.  Our diverse faculty reflects the vitality and the pluralism of what Sculpture can encompass.  New York City’s vital art scene, both its museums and galleries are utilized and incorporated into the course work.  Nationally recognized established and cutting edge visiting artists and critics add a dynamic component, giving lectures, individual and group critique.
