Pratt Institute

Painting

The Painting curriculum at Pratt Institute is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the leading programs in undergraduate Fine Arts education and has produced numerous prominent artists since its inception. Rigorous training in the fundamentals and skilled use of materials is matched with seminar courses that use the city’s museums and galleries as primary texts. Students become aware of current paintings trends, as well as significant ideas inherited from past centuries.

Our students are taught by highly active, award winning professional artists drawn from the center of the New York art world. This large, dedicated faculty of diverse backgrounds brings their unique knowledge and experience to train today’s young artists, encouraging them to explore and develop their own personal expression. Each student is offered their own studio in their senior year in which to develop their most advanced work.

This final thesis year puts an emphasis on individual meetings with professors; participation in “Senior Survey,” a week long critique with prominent visiting artists; and a Thesis Exhibition in which each student presents their work publicly on the Pratt campus.

Many of our painting majors are admitted to leading graduate programs around the country, Including Yale University, Columbia University and Goldsmiths', London.
