Drawing

Drawing influences virtually every form of art, and the Drawing Emphasis at Pratt offers students the opportunity to work across the board to interpret and define what drawing is and what drawing can be.  It is an opportunity for students to explore and develop their own personal expression based on the timeless act of mark making.  It embraces multicultural concerns, new technologies, and primitive and traditional practices.  Students are encouraged to explore drawing through a comprehensive study of how marks are made, how they interact and how that interaction conveys meaning.

Drawing influences virtually every form of art, and the Drawing Emphasis at Pratt offers students the opportunity to work across the board to interpret and define what drawing is and what it can be.

A highly regarded faculty of outstanding artists insures a diverse approach to drawing.  Museums, galleries and alternative art venues around New York City are integral to the curriculum.  The Drawing Emphasis challenges students to take their interest in drawing and run with it, to immerse themselves in the act of making drawings, and to look at drawings, and to think about drawings with curiosity, energy, intuition and imagination.

By its very nature, drawing acts as a direct and immediate record in time.   It can reveal thoughts, ideas and connections based on observation, interpretation and conceptualization.  It can be spontaneous or methodical.  But no matter what form drawing takes, The Drawing Emphasis is uniquely suited to support the broad scope and mission of the Fine Arts Department, Pratt Institute and the students who use it as their bridge to the world beyond.
