Film B.F.A.
About Film/Video
The Film/Video department provides a foundation in all aspects of the moving image while inspiring students to explore various modes of filmmaking, including narrative, documentary and experimental. Pratt's Film/Video program emphasizes conceptual and artistic development and encourages collaboration with students in other disciplines. The department promotes critical thinking and independence across the vast spectrum of media making.
Our Mission Statement
With emphasis on artistic development coupled with critical thinking, historical analysis, and communication skills, the Department of Film/Video prepares students to become effective media artists and professionals. Development of a personal creative identity begins with a highly structured sophomore curriculum and broadens to a guided and self-defined senior project. Graduates are expected to demonstrate excellence in artistic vision and professional skills, innovation, and a contextual understanding of their work in contemporary culture.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film
Film/Video offers a Film B.F.A. The four year program is structured to offer parallel production courses in the latest image and sound techniques at each level of the curriculum. Students acquire foundation skills while developing their own artistic vision. Courses covering project development, production, critical analyses and contemporary issues augment the education of the media makers of the future.
During their course of study, students are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities provided by Pratt's close proximity to New York City, including internships, industry events and screenings and exhibitions. At the close of the fourth year, the program culminates in a senior film project that students can produce in any genre and in a variety of media formats. The projects, which are screened at an end-of-year show, become students' portfolios for graduate school applications, film festival submissions and as calling cards to potential employers.
