Known as the mandymachine, the premise for my performance and video work is an inquiry as to how we structure our lives through thought and action. It is an investigation that focuses on the outward manifestations of the self, weather as an individual or as part of a collective. I have generated site-specific video installations as well as performances in a variety of gallery, performance and public settings in the US and Europe. In 2000 my video work was featured in the 2000 Whitney Biennial.
How ‘place’ gender, fantasy and media affect cultural expectations, dictate much of the relationship one has to one’s expressive experience.
As the rules that govern our lives, are defined by social, political and spiritual belief systems, this residency has been aimed at understanding the extent to which such norms require a restrictive discipline of the body.
Through my most recent exchange between myself and youths in McHenry County, Illinois we have embarked on a poetic exploration of the forms through which the body seeks physical as well as spiritual refuge.
