Biography

In the fall of 2009 Eva Díaz joined the Pratt Institute faculty as Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art. Her book on Black Mountain College will be released in the fall of 2013 by University of Chicago Press, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the College. Called The Experimenters, it examines how the interdisciplinary group of artists at Black Mountain proposed new models of art practice around the concept of experimentation, and focuses on three key Black Mountain teachers in the late 1940s and early 1950s: Josef Albers, John Cage, and Buckminster Fuller. Professor Díaz's writing appears in magazines and journals such as The Art Bulletin, Art Journal, Art in America, Cabinet, Frieze, Grey Room, and Tate Etc., and she is a regular contributor to Artforum. Her article on race, New Orleans, and the work of McCallum/Tarry will be published in the fall 2012 issue of the MIT Press journal October, and her article on Sharon Lockhart appears in the 2012 catalog of the LACMA and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem exhibitions of the artist’s work. Her essay on the New Orleans-based artist Deborah Luster will appear in the upcoming issue of the UK journal Art & the Public Sphere. She is currently working on a book about the legacy of Buckminster Fuller’s work in contemporary art practices titled The Fuller Effect.
