Biography

Shirley Kaneda has shown extensively both in the US and in Europe with more than 20 solo shows and numerous group exhibitions. She has been the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Pollock Krasner Foundation, The Elizabeth Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.  She has also written criticism and curated shows since 1989.

As critic and art historian, Matt Biro has stated:
“For over two decades, Shirley Kaneda has explored the possibilities of abstract painting in a number of unique and thought-provoking ways.  An artist who pushes the limits of painterly form today, Kaneda is an analytical and historically informed painter. She excels in juxtaposing a wide variety of gestures, shapes and patterns in a manner that suggests an archaeology of twentieth century modernism.”

She has been a contributing editor at Bomb Magazine since 1992.
