Biography

Dr. Livio Dimitriu is a Proffesor of Architecture at Pratt since 1981. He has taught here Graduate Design, Third through 5th Year undergraduate Design, Theory/History undergraduate and graduate, and Media. Dr. Livio Dimitriu is the founder of the Urban Studies and Architecture Institute (est. 1978), a public service and research organization based in New York and at the Giusti del Giardino Palace in Verona, Italy. He is currently the Chief Editor of USA Books, Senior International Editor of Arhitext Design Magazine, and was a member of the permanent editorial board for Controspazio Magazine/Italy, and Senior International Editor of Octogon. Mr. Livio Dimitriu practices with his own New York firm since 1978. The projects involve residential, institutional, and religious architecture, urban design, industrial and graphic design in USA, Italy, Japan and Romania, including over a hundred and twenty interiors and two Kips Bay Showcase Invitationals. Current design/build projects in Europe involve high-end multiple dwellings in Europe, historic rennovation/restoration and industrial/graphic design work in the USA. The work receive international and national awards, including the Honor Award/First Prize from the American Institute of Architects/New York Chapter (1985), First Prize Places Competition (1984), Selected/Venice Biennale (1991 & 1985), Gold Medal Urban Design Cefalu, Italy (1979), Bronze Medal Urban Design, Pavia, Italy (1983), Honorable Mention Shinkenchiku, Japan (1979), Finalist/Boston Artists’ Housing Competition (1987), Finalist/Mimar Competition Saudi Arabia (1985). Projects were exhibited at the German Architecture Museum, Taiwan Fine Arts Museum, Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Venice Biennale, MOMA/NY, and Museum of Modern Art/Paris, and other institutions in 28 countries. Mr. Dimitriu accepted a Ph.D. in Theory and History of Architecture with the highest honors from the University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu,” received an honorary Master Architect in Stone from the Antica Corporazzione dell’Arte della Pietra in Verona, and holds a Bachelor in Architecture from The Cooper Union. He was a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar to Europe, recipient of a Research Grant from the Romanian Ministery of Education, a UAUIM Post-Graduate Research Fellowship, and a Pratt Institute Research Grant. He collaborated with O.M.A./Rem Koolhas, Peter Eisenman, Colin Rowe, Mario Gandelsonas, and consulted in industrial design with Dino Gavina, Carlo Scarpa, Enzo Mari. He was chief architect for the firm of Jacobs Nicolaides focusing on luxury villas, religious buildings and corporate projects. Mr. Dimitriu held academic and administrative appointments at twenty one universities in North America, Europe, and Asia, including Program Director for Master of Building Design at Columbia University, and Director of Architecture at the National University for Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu in Romania. Mr. Dimitriu initiated and implemented a nation-wide pilot program for changes in architectural education for Romania, sponsored by the US Information Agency. Dimitriu presided numerous international competition juries in Europe, Asia, and the USA, including the National Arhitext Award for Architecture and Interior Design, Romania, was a member of the New Orleans AIA Honor Awards Jury in Architecure, the Washington, DC AIA Honor Awards in Interior Design, and a founding member of the Icelandic School of Architecture. He served on the Canadian Schools of Architecture Accreditation Board. Prof. Dimitriu curated over forty five premiere architecture exhibitions, including New York Architects, Colombian Architecture, Architects in Sicily, Scarpa, Sartoris, Botta, Gregotti, Figini & Pollini, Purini, Anselmi, Vacchini, Reinardt & Reichlin, Studer, among others. He was an exhibitions consultant for the German Architecture Museum and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. He was a founding member of Pamphlet Architecture, and he founded the New York Architects publications series and related international traveling exhibitions. Mr. Dimitriu authored/co-authored thirty volumes in the USA, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Romania. Dr. Dimitriu’s critical writings and projects were published in over two dozens volumes in, including: Pamphlet Architecture/Stairwells, New York Architects vol. 1, 2, 3, New York Architecture, Architectures for the Third Millennium, Alberto Sartoris ed il ‘900, Ready Houses, Palimpsests of Stone, Subversive Insertions, The Angel Factory, En plein air, River of Stone, Projets pour les Halles, Morgan Library, Il mestiere del’architetto, New York Archipelago, Urban Rooms, The Magic Mountain, Palipsests of Stone, Of Architecture and Captive Landscapes, Architecture:Bodies of Space, Brancusi Architect/World Monuments Fund, ARKIS/Islandic Architecture/Museum of Modern Art in Rejkjavik. He contributed articles and projects to over a hundred magazine publications around the world and. He is currently working on new volumes including Building/Buildings On the Edge, The Modern Movement: Pentimenti and Other Tectonic Fables, and Documents of the Late Modern Movement, and Carlo Scarpa: Vernacular and Avant-Garde. Prof. Dimitriu is a full professor with tenure for Design and Theory/History at Pratt Institute Undergraduate/Graduate School of Architecture. Other continuous honorary advisory involvement in academia is at “Ion Mincu” Univeersity for the PhD Program.
