Biography

Gita believes in sustainability as a holistic and supple design approach, integral to all aspects of design and construction.. She also puts her beliefs into practice as an architectural educator. Her pedagogical approach focuses on an integration of academic studies and hands-on tactile learning to explore and understand the built environment and our place within it. Thread collective explores the seams between building, art and landscape, not only as disciplinary boundaries to be blurred, but as spatial edges, rich with design opportunity. A broadly defined notion of sustainability, existing site characteristics, and the sensory experience of the user further inform and strengthen our design process. Multi-disciplinary, the firm values collaboration and has worked with artists, industrial designers, musicians, and dancers, in addition to other architects. thread collective is committed to integrating sustainable principles in every aspect of their design process.

  • In conjunction with Added Value, thread collective received a New York State Council of the Arts grant to complete planning studies and schematic designs for a 7,000 sf Red Hook Center on Sustainability and Culture, on Added Value’s 3.5 acre farm, 2009 – present
  • In conjunction with Added-Value, thread collective has received a Design Trust for Public Space grant to study urban agriculture and its impact on public spaces in New York City 2009 – present
  • One Prize finalist, for NORC Farms project 2010
