Biography

Stuart Pertz is an architect, an urban designer, an urban planner, a facility strategist, a management consultant and a community planning advocate.

As an architect, Mr. Pertz has designed housing for the NY State Urban Development Corporation, master plans for Lehman College, restoration of McKim Mead and White’s 55th Street town house for US Trust, the headquarters for Shering Plough Corporation, the American University in Beirut’s rebuilt Main Hall and scores of other corporate, commercial and interior design projects.

As an urban designer and planner he has developed zoning and urban design plans for Charleston S.C., downtown plans for New Britain and Norwalk, Connecticut, Hoboken’s Historic Preservation Plan, Master Plans and a new community in the Town Of Islip, L.I., planning for Brooklyn’s MetroTech Center, and plans for development in Taipei, Taiwan, Haiko, Hainan, Guangzhou, China, Yerevan, Armenia and the waterfront of Kuwait City.

As a facilities strategist and management consultant he has lead teams working with General Motors, Union Carbide, Bank One, McGraw Hill, Merrill Lynch and ABC News.  He has done organizational development projects for McGraw Hill and the N.Y. City Department of Parks.  He has directed the consulting strategic planning team for General Motors’ corporate restructuring and multi-campus redevelopment in S. E. Michigan and has overseen Merrill Lynch office facilities projects throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Mr. Pertz has been active as a Planning Committee member woth the Municipal Art Society where he now chairs the Brooklyn Working Group.  He is an active research fellow of the NY Building Foundation.  He is also a member of the executive committee of the Campaign for Community Based Planning.

Bridging two careers for his first twenty-five years in the profession, Mr. Pertz was a Professor of Architecture and Planning and then Chair of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at Pratt Institute while pursuing his practice.  He has lectured extensively and developed course work and curricula for a variety of city, strategic and facility planning courses.  He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a past director of the New York City Chapter and a past member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. 

He has served as a member of the New York City Planning Commission and as Chairman of the Board of the University Settlement, America’s first such community service organization.
