Facilities and the Environment
The Institute is dedicated to providing a clean and safe environment on-campus. Pratt participates in a solid waste and recycling management program that is coordinated by Five Star Carting. Waste is collected at both the Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses and is post-sorted at Five Star’s facilities to separate recyclables from organic items. Pratt has recycling receptacles placed strategically throughout the campus to assist with post-sorting efforts. There are also recycling dumpster placed on campus grounds. All plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard, wood, and masonry are sorted, separated, and recycled at Five Star’s complex.

Cleaning Products- Facilities is striving to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We have introduced Green Seal cleaning products. Cleaning products used by facilities are environmentally friendly, and not hazardous. We use both Green Seal environmentally certified, and Non-Green Seal environmentally certified products. A list of Green Seal products includes: Crew (Bathroom Cleaner), Stride (Neutral Cleaner), Freedom (Floor Stripper), Aquaria (Floor Finisher) and Glance (Glass Cleaner).
Ice and Snow Melt – During the winter, the campus receives many weather events ranging from rain, snow, and ice. The Institute has set forth numerous ways to manage these weather events, and have enlisted the help of the Facilities department to also make them as environmentally friendly as possible. The Institute uses a product known as Magic Salt or Green Scapes, which are environmentally friendly products. Also, it is more effective than its competitors as a smaller amount can be applied and works much faster. The concern of the Institute was the potential effects to storm water run-off, but both Magic Salt and Green Scapes are biodegradable and safe for the environment.
