Landscape Architecture

Students work on wooden structures that they've installed in the Catskill Forest

Students earning an MLA degree at Pratt are taught to embrace an inclusive approach to design that bridges culture and nature, ecology and policy, living and built environments. With so many challenges at hand, and underfoot, we prioritize collaborative and team-based learning, articulating changes between large scale systems, expansive historical precedents, evolutionary processes, and individual organisms. Landscape Architecture is a discipline, a profession, and a practice that informs the environment at every scale. We celebrate this legacy by imagining global education as a collaboration with the soils, plants and waters that sustain species.

Career Opportunities

The program aims to enable graduates to enter the profession with a sophisticated portfolio of flexible skills, knowledge and understanding.

Graduates from the MLA program progress to work in design practice and landscape stewardship both nationally and internationally, as well as contributing to academia and aspects of governance of a wide spectrum of landscapes across a broad range of scales.

Our Faculty

As educators, our most important task is to determine how we can create equitable learning for all students, which includes diverse ways of knowing. Our program is supported by colleagues, students, and professional associations that work through civic engagement and respects the traditional and unceded homeland of the Lenape people.  In a time of great uncertainty, we are certain that our relationship to the land requires our complete attention. See all Graduate Architecture and Urban Design faculty and administrators.

  • Of all the New York City institutions that Pratt students have access to (and there are many), the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has got to be our favorite—especially this time of year, when the Cherry Esplanade is in bloom.

Our program is proud to partner directly with the garden on multiple of our fieldwork projects, and we all appreciate how easy it is to head down the road and marvel at their grounds.

  • LAR-704 | Land Studio IV: Park

Last week, second-year students in the fourth course in our core studio sequence took a multi-day fieldwork trip upstate to visit various sites throughout the Hudson River Valley. The trip’s assignments took management and labor as their unifying themes.

Steven Conaway, PhD and Director of Horticulture at Wave Hill in the Bronx led students on a tour of one of NYC’s most intensively managed landscapes, and shared what it takes to curate and maintain a series of unique and diverse ornamental planted spaces.

At Downing Park, students partook in a self-directed analysis exercise of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s final collaboration in contrast with their studio’s site of focus, Prospect Park.

Additional sites of Opus 40, Dia Beacon and Storm King all underscored the critical importance of designing spaces and calibrating materials and construction to accommodate and be resilient within the face of mounting climate and societal pressures.

  • LAR-652 | Landscape Studies II: Indigeneity
Last week first-year students visited the “End of Fossil Fuels” exhibition at the @climatemuseum in Manhattan. The exhibition explores how the fossil fuel industry contributes to the climate crisis, while also incorporating histories of environmental (in)justice and activism.
Students explored the interdisciplinary exhibition–which fused history, art, activism, and science–as a way to contemplate how we both construct and perceive narratives about the environment. The class discussed the place of storytelling and creativity in communicating challenging facts about the climate crisis, and contemplated how this impacts their role as landscape designers.

  • This week at Pratt MLA was filled with special events featuring many leaders in the field of landscape architecture.

On Tuesday, we had Dilip Da Cunha in conversation with Rosetta S. Elkin about what the word “environment” means, and how designers can relate with greater empathy.

On Wednesday, our Professional Practice I course hosted a panel featuring instructors Ellen Garrett and Signe Nielsen in conversation with Nancy Prince (Chief of Landscape Architecture, NYC Parks) and Kevin Quinn (Senior Vice President, Design & Construction, Hudson River Park).

And on Thursday, Julian Raxworthy gave a talk on his award-winning and influential book Overgrowth: Practices between Landscape Architecture and Gardening.

MLA students and prospective students interacted in conversations about what an environment is, professional practice in New York with NYC parks and Hudson River Park, and learned about the practices bridging landscape architecture and garden making.

Thanks so much to all who participated!

  • A rare window into the hidden: Maintenance and Operations in Prospect Park for LAR-704

As part of a wider exploration of park management systems in the wake of climate and social pressures for their fourth semester core studio, students in LAR - 704 were introduced this week to the maintenance and operations facilities that make Prospect Park. Leila Mougoi Bakhtiari, director of Landscape Management of Prospect Park Alliance, guided students on a tour of PPA’s maintenance facilities and spoke on the challenges of operating one of NYC’s largest and most beloved parks on limited resources. Students learned about specific machinery used within the park, including the “Floating Goat”- an aquatic weed harvester used to remove invasive plants within the lake, and about the robust volunteer community that helps keep the park open to all. Thank you to Leila and the PPA for bringing to light the machine that keeps the park open to all!

Of all the New York City institutions that Pratt students have access to (and there are many), the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has got to be our favorite—especially this time of year, when the Cherry Esplanade is in bloom.

Our program is proud to partner directly with the garden on multiple of our fieldwork projects, and we all appreciate how easy it is to head down the road and marvel at their grounds.

We’re excited to be preparing for our Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board candidacy visit, taking place early next week. In preparation for the visit, we’ve assembled multiple shows of Pratt MLA student work spanning every semester of the program’s existence, from Fall 2022 to the current Spring 2024 semester. Faculty, students, and staff have all been on hand to assist with this comprehensive representation of our program’s mission to advance land-based research at the cutting edge of climate and public change. @prattgaud @prattsoa

LAR-704 | Land Studio IV: Park

LAR-652 | Landscape Studies II: Indigeneity
Last week first-year students visited the “End of Fossil Fuels” exhibition at the @climatemuseum in Manhattan. The exhibition explores how the fossil fuel industry contributes to the climate crisis, while also incorporating histories of environmental (in)justice and activism.
Students explored the interdisciplinary exhibition–which fused history, art, activism, and science–as a way to contemplate how we both construct and perceive narratives about the environment. The class discussed the place of storytelling and creativity in communicating challenging facts about the climate crisis, and contemplated how this impacts their role as landscape designers.

This week at Pratt MLA was filled with special events featuring many leaders in the field of landscape architecture.

A rare window into the hidden: Maintenance and Operations in Prospect Park for LAR-704
